Pulse Polio drive in the city

The annual National Level Pulse Polio drive happened on the 23rd of January and Bangalore was no exception. There was a massive drive and lots of awareness spread by the media well in advance. But what really amazed me was the extent to which the doctors, the nurses and the anganwadi workers in Bangalore went to ensure that the children below the age of five were administered the vaccine.

I was at the Bangalore City Railway Station on that day and it surprised me to see numerous Polio vaccination stalls at various entrances and exits of the premises. There were even stalls inside the station on the platforms. The job of some of those doctors who voluntarily went to the parents of children below the age of five and administered the drops was commendable. Moreover I saw many volunteers visiting each and every house in my area making sure that children get this vaccine. All this effort being made is really appreciable.

I learnt from one of the doctors that this time, instead of the usual vaccine, they were using a new vaccine called the "Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine" which fights against the P1 and P3 strains of the deadly Polio. I was also told that this vaccine had already been tried in high polio prevalent states.

Hoping that every parent with kids below the age of five would have visited such stalls and help reduce the incidence of Polio in our country.
